I love you…T-H-I-S…much!

Ok, let’s look at the Love side.

Jesus said in Mark 12:30 “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.”

Let’s break this down: “Love the Lord your God

He is Your God.  He is The Lord.  He deserves Your Love.

Heart – Feelings, emotion. Nearly all the references to heart in the Bible refer to some aspect of human personality: Love, joy, sorrow, peace, bitterness, courage and fear. The heart is where we find man’s true character. What is real about a person will come from the heart.

1 Samuel 16:7 says; “A man looks at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart.”

We are to love God with all our heart!

Soul – breath, very deepest feeling. The soul is the inter-most part of man. It is our soul that separates us from the animals. It is our soul that will never perish or die. Our soul will live forever. It is who we are. It was His soul that Jesus gave up as a ransom for mankind.

We are to love God with all our soul!

Mind – understanding, imagination, thought, reason. It today’s society, the mind is thought of as; morally neutral. Yet in the New Testament, the mind is clearly thought of as; either good or evil. The mind can be hardened, blinded, corrupted or debased. Or – the mind can be; renewed or pure. We get to choose.

We are to love God with all our mind!

Strength – might, ability, power, force.  After studying this in the Greek and commentaries and other places in Scripture – I am convinced that what is being expressed here is this: We are to take everything within us and use all of our being, with all of our power to pull it all towards one thing!

                Loving God!

There are many people who try to love God with just their heart. And still others who try to love God with just their mind. They try to justify and excuse it with; “It’s just the way I am”. They think they are controlled by their heart (emotion, feeling) or their mind (reason, thinking). But the truth is: that’s just plain self-centeredness (sin). We are supposed to turn our whole life to Him. All of our being – Our heart, soul,  mind strength – everything!

When you love God with all your being – You are just going to obey Him! And not because you have to…because you want to! Your every being is going to want to please God!

Now about what Jesus called the second most important commandment: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”                     If we are obeying the first commandment, do you really think we’re going to have a problem with the second one?
