Dead Last

30 04 2011

I’m sitting here in my home in Tampa waiting…waiting for the last pod to be full, waiting for the truck to take it away, waiting for the time to drive our cars to our new home in Tulsa…waiting. I am not good at waiting so I started thinking about what I was going to do when I got to Tulsa–all the work ahead of me. I picked up my Bible and opened to the book of Mark and started reading in Chapter 9 when something caught my attention and I started laughing.

In Mark 9:33 Jesus asks His followers a question: “What were you arguing about on the road?” Here’s why I laughed; they were arguing about who was the “greatest”. It just seems silly to me because the “Greatest” was right there with them. Think about it – The Rock, The Way, The Truth, The Light, The Lord of Lords, The King of Kings, The Alpha, The Omega, The Beginning and The End was standing right in front of them. God was walking on earth and these guys were arguing over who was the “Greatest”. I found that funny.

It’s a good thing Jesus didn’t have human temperament. I mean, if it were me…I would have turned them into donkeys and then asks them who was the “Greatest”?

And how does Jesus respond? He sits them down and calmly teaches a lesson…Verse 35: “If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all.”

I admit…I want to do some great things for God in our new ministry work. I want to see new campus ministries planted all across our country. I want to see a movement that saves souls by the millions. I want it to be the “Greatest” movement in my lifetime, but for that to happen I think all of us involved will need to learn the lesson Jesus taught His followers that day. We “must be the very last, and the servant of all”.

“Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; he rises to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him!” Isaiah 30: 18
